This line ran north from Perth, through farmland, before turning east to run through Strathmore and reach Forfar. The largest towns are Coupar Angus and Forfar. Other towns such as Alyth, Blairgowrie, Kirriemuir and Dunkeld were not passed through by the line and had to be reached by later branches.
From Perth to Forfar. At Perth the line connected with the Scottish Central Railway and the Dundee and Perth Railway.
Perth (formerly Perth General)
The Scottish Central Railway and Dundee and Perth Railway joined the Scottish Midland Junction Railway here.
Dovecotland Junction
This was the junction of lines to the north of Perth station. There was a tall signalbox here, now gone.
Perth Shed (Highland Railway)
The shed survived until recently. It sat on the west side of the line and was really two building side by side. Latterly it saw use as a garage.
Perth New Yard
This modern (1950s) marshalling yard to the west of the mainline is still in use today - but mostly by maintenance trains.
Perth had a large goods yard slightly further south and to the east of the mainline. The site is now occupied by supermarkets and superstores.
Almond Valley Junction
From this south facing junction the Perth, Almond Valley and Methven Railway ran west to Methven. It was untimately extended east to Crieff, then Comrie and finally Balquhidder Junction on the Callander and Oban Railway.
The station building still stands.
No text entered yet. The Bankfoot Light Railway joined at this point.
The Perth and Dunkeld Railway (now part of the Perth to Inverness main line) joins the line at this junction.
Little remains of Ballathie station but the formation is almost intact at its former site. Some of the trackbed east from here has been plowed through.
Cargill station is now a house and restaurant. To the west of the station was the large Cargill Viaduct.
The station building here is now a house andthe old diminutive signalbox still stands.
There was an end-on junction with the re-gauged Newtyle and Coupar Angus Railway here which ran east to Ardler Junction while the Midland route ran west and south to Perth. To the west of the station was the east facing junction for the Blairgowrie Branch. The junction was by a level crossing beside which the signalbox survived for many years after closure.
The line joined the re-gauged Newtyle and Coupar Angus Railway here which ran west to Coupar Angus while the Midland line ran east to Alyth Junction.
Here the line joined the re-gauged Newtyle, Eassie and Glamiss Railway which ran east to Glamis while the Midland line ran west to Ardler Junction.
Here the line made an end-on connection to the re-gauged Newtyle, Eassie and Glamiss Railway west to Alyth Junction. The Midland ran east to Forfar.
At this east facing junction the Kirriemuir Branch joined the main line from the north. There was an old station here with very low platforms.
At this east facing junction the Forfar and Brechin Railway joined the main line from the north.
This was a large station with two through platforms and bays at either end.
Here the new line met the re-gauged older Arbroath and Forfar Railway at an west facing junction. The old station was left as a branch.
