Penmanshiel Tunnel

A southbound HST creeps out of Penmanshiel Tunnel on 15 March 1979, two days before the tragic tunnel collapse in which two men died. (The tunnel works were being undertaken to increase the line's loading gauge to accommodate the new generation of containers.) As the tunnel was in such a dangerous condition following the collapse, the line was subsequently rerouted and the tunnel sealed, with the men's bodies left entombed. A memorial now stands on the hillside above the tunnel. See image 28041
