Hammersmith [Midland]

Train from Swanwick Junction just arrived at the western terminus of the Midland Railway Centre's line at Hammersmith in Derbyshire, behind 47401, on 4th May 2019. This station did not exist prior to the closure of the Ambergate to Pye Bridge line in 1968 and was built purely for the heritage line. To the west the line to Ambergate has disappeared beneath a wretched road widening scheme. As the nameboard implies, Hammersmith was the birthplace of scientist, engineer and inventor Sir Barnes Wallis (1887-1979) of 'Bouncing Bomb' fame, immortalised in the 1954 film 'The Dam Busters' with Michael Redgrave as Barnes and Richard Todd as Wing Commander Guy Gibson. Plus, of course, that stirring March by composer Eric Coates.
