Bankier Distillery

Location type

Name and dates

Bankier Distillery (1828-1928)

Description

This distillery was in the west end of Banknock, on the north bank of the Forth and Clyde Canal (which had a wharf). It was just east of Wyndford Lock.

A tramway (Banknock Colliery Tramway) ran from the quayside past the distillery to run north to Banknock station's goods yard and over the line to the Livingstone Pit of the Banknock Colliery. Prior to the opening of the Kilsyth and Bonnybridge Railway the tramway extended further east past Banknock House to further pits. Whether the tramway and distillery were directly associated with each other is not immediately clear - no sidings ran into the distillery and in the early OS maps the line is clear of the distillery which expanded out towards it.

Bonded warehousing survived here until the 1980s.
