1844  Dalkey Atmospheric Railway (Dublin and Kingstown Railway)
2 mile long extension opened from Kingstown Harbour to Dalkey [1st] . This used Samuda and Clegg's Atmospheric Railway system (later used by Brunel for the South Devon Railway).
1845  Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway Monkland and Kirkintilloch Railway Ballochney Railway Slamannan Railway
At the instigation of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway the Monkland and Kirkintilloch Railway, Ballochney Railway and Slamannan Railway pool their receipts. The Wishaw and Coltness Railway did not get involved.
1919  Cowdenbeath North Junction to Lumphinnans Central Junction (North British Railway)
All passenger trains start to use the Cowdenbeath (New) deviation with the opening of the Cowdenbeath North Junction to Lumphinnans Central Junction link. Cowdenbeath (Old) closed to passengers. Cowdenbeath South Junction to Lumphinnans Central Junction given over to goods and mineral traffic.
1964  Cornhill Branch (North Eastern Railway)
Scottish Rambler No 3 runs from Coldstream to Wooler.
1965  Kelso Branch (York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway)
Kelso to Tweedmouth closed to goods.
1973  Last American Troops leave Vietnam

Pacer 142043 on a service from Liverpool to Wigan is partly derailed at Carr Mill by a sleeper placed on the line.
2010  Athenry and Ennis Junction Railway
Official re-opened between Ennis and Athenry to carry a Limerick - Galway Ceannt service.

Ex-LNWR railmotor LMS No. 10698, paused (and posed) at Nateby whilst working a passenger service between Knott End and the main line at Garstang & Catterall. Might this have been a <I>Last day of Service</I> photo? Services ceased on and from 31st March 1930 and Nateby closed completely although goods trains continued to pass through. 10698 was renumbered as 29988 in 1933 and became the last of its type in service running through the war until withdrawal in 1948.

To the south is Belmont Castle, once the home of James Key Caird, jute baron and mathematician. His name was given to the whaleboat James Caird, famous for the Voyage of the James Caird which led to the rescue of the members of Ernest Shackleton's Endurance expedition.
