Carmuirs Tunnel

Location type

Tunnel

Name and dates

Carmuirs Tunnel (1848-)

Opened on the Scottish Central Railway.

Description

The Glasgow-Stirling line passes under the Forth and Clyde Canal here by means of this short double track tunnel. The line approaches in a cutting to either side, particularly to the west.

The tunnel, a concrete structure built on the foundations of the earlier twin tunnel masonry structure, allowed additional headroom for line electrification and solved a long running problem of mudslides onto the trackbed from above.

The twin single track tunnels were removed during the 2014-2015 Christmas and New Year period.
