Description

This station was immediately west of Busbie Junction. This was the junction between the 1843 Glasgow, Paisley Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway and its 1848 line to Irvine which provided an outlet for Ayrshire coal at Ardrossan and opened in the same year as the Galston branch, Muirkirk [1st] branch and the main line extended as far as Auchinleck.

The original station was short lived although a goods yard remained here.

It re-opened as Crosshouse in 1872 with four platforms - two on each line. The goods yard on the north side was originally approached by reversing onto a reversing spur from the northernmost platform (for Kilmarnock) and a direction connection from the Dalry Junction direction was later added. A signal box, 'Crosshouse North' opened at the west end of the main line platforms on the north side of the line at the goods yard's reversing spur. It was renamed 'Crosshouse Station' in 1885.

Just shy of the junction on the Irvine line, and to the east of the station, was a branch to Busbiehead Colliery Pit No 2, approached from the west. Also on the Irvine line was Plann Fireclay Works and Plann Colliery Pit No 8 both served from a short branch west of the station.

The Irvine line closed in 1965 and the box closed, the remaining part of the station closed the following year. The closure of the Irvine line ended the Kilmarnock to Ardrossan Town passenger service. The platforms were removed.

The main line continued until 1973.

A long single siding out from Kilmarnock to Busbie Junction remained until around 1987/88, probably in use by PW.

The goods yard survived in a scrapyard for many years but appears to have been replaced. The station cottage remains at the entry to the yard, the former goods yard. Both routes are now footpaths.
