Opened on the Glasgow District Subway. This underground station adjoins Glasgow Queen Street High Level and Glasgow Queen Street Low Level, both to the east and connected by a travelator to the underground station. The station is located below the north end of the pedestrianised Buchanan Street. The ticket office is below street level with a glass covered stairwell to the south and glass covered escalator to the north for access. Half a former Subway carriage is displayed in the ticket hall and circulating area. Below this is the two platform station. The original island platform now only serves the inner circle, a second platform was added for the outer circle due to the level of traffic at this station.
The station is close to the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and Buchanan Galleries, both to the north. Buchanan Street is connected to Sauchiehall Street at its north end and Argyle Street at its south end, all three are famous Glasgow shopping streets.
Buchanan Street formerly continued further north to reach the mainline terminus Buchanan Street, now gone.
