![This is from an engraving of Bristol dated 1887.<br /><br>

Just below left of centre is Temple Meads station. Curving down then left is the B&E line to Taunton; running right is the GWR line to Bath. The triangular junction centre right is the southern end of Filton bank with the line running up to the top left. The line to St Mary Redcliffe and the docks runs left from Temple Meads just behind Brunel's original train shed.<br /><br>

Across the top of the picture is the Midland line to Avonmouth (I am told one of the viaducts has the wrong number of arches!), Starting just west of the triangle then running up and right is the Midland line to Gloucester.<br /><br>
<br>
The Midland lines are both gone, now, but a connection from Lawrence Hill remains to a smaller yard. The line to the docks has also gone but built since 1887 is the avoiding line which crosses the river on the lower right. The NBL Class 22 is in early rail blue with a half yellow panel and engineless although the flat wagon next to it appears to be carrying a power unit under the tarpaulin. The green Hymek has already lost its engine and the roofless early blue specimen behind is in an equally sorry state. ![Western D1019 and Hymek D7089 on the scrap line at Swindon Works on 16 March 1974. Both had been withdrawn the previous May but the Hymek (which is clearly in better condition here) was later removed from the works yard for departmental service as train heating unit ADB968005. This was only for a brief period but the loco didn't return to Swindon, being broken up at Thomson's in Stockton in late 1975 or early 1976. D1019 only lasted a few more months and was cut up at Swindon in October 1974. (With thanks to Peter Todd and Crinan Dunbar). <br>

![Originally known simply as 20, Ruston & Hornsby 4wDM 97020 was built in 1957 for use in Reading Signal Works and remained there all its working life. It was tricky to see as the yard was not visible from passing trains. By the time this photo was taken, through the bars of an overbridge, the shunter was on borrowed time as its replacement, Barclay Class 06 No. 06003, had arrived in Reading from Scotland [See image 22416]. 97020 never did leave this yard, being broken up there by a contractor in August 1982. ![<I>A long way from home at Reading Depot.</I> The former D2420, 06003, is now the sole surviving Barclay Class 06 0-4-0 DM shunter and after a period at Barrow Hill is currently at Peak Rail. It may have escaped the scrap man by being transferred from Scotland to Departmental duties at Reading Signal Works. Here it is shown, newly renumbered as 97804, at Reading Depot just prior to transfer to the works to replace 97020 [See image 22413]. The Barclay stayed there until 1984 when it moved into preservation.<br>

The Class 444 units have an external resemblance to the Class 380 mock-up currently on display in Glasgow Central Station. Today it's a terminus as the line on to Pilning closed in 1968. ![A place that has seen many changes over the years, Jewellry Quarter was originally just a location on a four track GWR main line (although there was a station at nearby Hockley). Later the line was downgraded and in 1972 it closed altogether, only to reopen for Snow Hill to Stourbridge trains in 1994 when this station was opened. A fair number of passengers had alighted from the recent 18.46 arrival formed of 150217, which had then continued on to the harbour station to complete the service from Gloucester. ![Platform view east at Clarbeston Road as 150217 runs back thro' the platform ECS, having previously drawn forward to the ground signal beyond the cross-over following arrival from Fishguard Harbour at 19.21. The unit will run back beyond the junction with the Milford Haven line to await its 20.05 return working back to the Harbour station. The unit had previously worked the 11.18 Cardiff Central to Maesteg, then ran to Cheltenham Spa before the 4hour 18minute journey to Fishguard Harbour. ![Conventional wisdom tells you that Birmingham's Duddeston viaduct was built as a ploy to further the GWR's interests, and was neither completed, nor used. However, this painted message ('Bordesley cattle station GWR') tells you the truth; that sidings were laid from Bordesley station along part of the deck to accommodate cattle traffic. ![As this sign is between two platforms (at Brownhills West on the Chasewater Railway), it is obviously not in its original location. Nonetheless, it's an excellent example of a maintenance boundary marker. I remember finding a couple of these in Pontymoile, on the South side of Pontypool, as the viaduct on the Blaenavon line was about to be demolished. I suspect it was enroute to the Mid-Hants Rly, they are having a Gala Weekend to celebrate the end of Southern Steam in 1967. ![Scene at Didcot on 20 January 2018, where twelve car EMU's are now gradually replacing 166 DMU's. However, the 166s still run to Oxford, so passengers have to change at Didcot. The 800's are running under electric power as far as Didcot and possibly further. Swindon goes live in April 2018. 387159 runs into Didcot from Paddington under electric power on a wet 20th January 2018.<br>

![A trip to Didcot on 8th March 2018 showed that the electrics are beginning to take over and I guess within a year most of the diesel powered passenger services will have gone. I'm told it is hoped the electric power will be on to Swindon and Royal Wootton Bassett by August. The new extension on Platforms 2 and 3 is also taking shape.<br>
