![Before the SPORTIS ticket machines appeared (1987 in the Edinburgh <br>
area) on-train tickets were laboriously written out by hand and a carbon copy kept. Here are two examples from the mid 1980s. Even the SPORTIS machines were rather limited by today's standards, and a copy of the National Fares Manual had to be carried on every train for anything even slightly unusual. <br>

Penton was a staffed station due to the absence of a footbridge, one requirement being to see passengers safely across the lines between the main station building and the down platform. The second notice was issued on 20/10/75 for a one way trip to Woodham Bros at Barry Dock for breaking, from where I <I>rescued</I> them. ![My first rover ticket dated for the October school holiday in 1979 and, according to BR, I was an adult at 16. Class 26s, 27s and corridor coaches on the 0940 to Inverness, and all for a pound a day. <br>

![This wagon label describes a consignment of coal (stove nuts) delivered to Charringtons coal concentration depot at Hythe, Colchester, in February 1981. The load originated at Onllwyn Washery in Wales. Hythe had two working coal depots at that time. ![Despite a major change in the issuing system the current credit <br>
card-shaped tickets have changed little since they were introduced <br>
20-odd years ago. They brought in standardised issue and replaced a <br>
number of styles of ticket, including this transitional style, issued at Queen Street for a journey to Balloch Central on 29 September 1984. This design was also credit card-sized but with square corners. Although issued partly electronically they still entailed the clerk fetching a ticket from a large rack of pre-printed destinations as their predecessors had done for 140 years. <br>

![You only have my word for this, but I did buy this ticket on South <br>
Gyle's opening day, 9 May 1985 [see image 19642]. Unfortunately the previous customer must have bought an advance ticket, and the mechanical machines of the time didn't default to that day's date for a new sale. Unlike other station openings around this time there was no commemorative ticket, and not even - it would seem - a pre-printed ordinary ticket. I had to say <I>South Gyle</I> to the ticket clerk three times as if she had never heard of the place. <br>

![I admit that this is an unimpressive specimen of a ticket, but it is <br>
made slightly noteworthy by the fact it was issued by the novel machine at South Gyle station on its opening day, 9 May 1985 [see image 19616]. The fact that this was a quarter of a century ago in no way makes me feel old. No way.<br>

![A ticket for Watford West, issued at Euston on 28 June 1985. Either they'd run out of pre-printed tickets for this destination, or, more likely, never had any. I remember the guard when I changed at Watford Junction being convinced that the few passengers who got on his Croxley Green train must be on the wrong one and meant to go to Euston instead. Now (2009) Watford West has seen no trains for years, but is not officially closed! [See image 20360]<br>

![It was not unknown for ticket machines to run out of years, as here, but I know this was issued on 31 August 1985. ScotRail took the opportunity during a steam special to Ayr to run it's own specials, a DMU to Ardrossan Harbour direct, ie via Byrehill and Dubbs Junctions. £1 return was reasonable even then.<br>

![An example of a 'breast pocket' ticket, one of several different styles swept away when APTIS was fully phased in by the late 1980s. It was issued on 27 September something; as often the cash register-style machines ran out of years before the end of their working lives. I think this one is from 1985 though. A journey from Kirkcaldy to Rosyth entailed a change at Inverkeithing in those pre-Fife Circle days. The 'Halt' would have been officially dropped by this date, though it appeared on the Solari indicator at Waverely until its replacement in 1997.<br>

![It's 1987 and rather generously I am allowed a discount on my Freedom of Scotland 14 day rover because I hold a Young Persons' Railcard. This gives me freedom of the Scottish rails and CalMac ferries for just over £3 a day! As I recall the journey took about 7 hours (two hour time difference), and at the end two Lada taxis to the hotel had to have external mirrors and windscreen wipers attached before setting off!
