Antrim Wire Tramway Co

Introduction

This was an aerial wire ropeway, a continuous wire rope with buckets carried on timber pylons, which stretched from iron ore mines near Cargan, Glenravel, to Red Bay Pier. Steam engines were located at Knockans Engine and near Evishacrow Engine (where Evishacrow Mine was served). The ore from Glenravel was exported to Barrow-in-Furness.

It closed following sabotage, the cutting of the rope, at Essathohan Bridge. The south west portion, serving the mines, from Cargan via Parkmore to Retreat Goods, overlapped with the Ballymena, Cushendall and Red Bay Railway. That company bought the remains in 1875 and did not re-open it, it's own line having reached Retreat in 1877.
