Bletchley Flyover (British Railways)

Introduction

Also known as the Cambridge flyover, this flyover was built south of Bletchley station allowing freight trains from Oxford to Cambridge (or vice versa) on the 'Varsity Line' to cross the London and Birmingham Railway. Opening was in 1959.

At the southern end a connection was made at Bletchley Flyover Junction to the former Buckinghamshire Railway and at the northern end the line divided, still on a viaduct at Flyover Junction with one fork continuing to Denbigh Hall South Junction on the London and Birmingham Railway and the other to Cambridge Flyover Single Line Junction and Fenny Stratford Bletchley Flyover Junction to meet the Bedford Railway.

This freight route was not a successful enterprise, despite the expense of the flyover. Traffic ceased altogether in 1993 although the flyover was retained and brought into use to reach a nearby landfill in 2006.

With a second newer Cambridge Flyover, or Hitchin Flyover, having opened in 2013 the name generally used for the flyover at Bletchley became the Bletchley flyover.

The flyover has been rebuilt, complete with a high level Bletchley station, as part of the re-opening of the railway between Bletchley and Oxford.
