Listowel and Ballybunion Railway

Introduction

This unusual railway using the Lartigue Railway Co's monorail system ran north west from Listowel to Ballybunion (alternative spelling Ballybunnion). This track consisted of a single rail supported on a series of triangular trestle frames which were braced at low level on either side with guide rails. The line did not become part of the Great Southern Railways system and, without state support, closed. A demonstration section of line has been recreated at Listowel.

Level crossings were awkward, requiring double drawbridges, the lifting portions meeting above the monorail when lowered. Points were replaced by turntables.
