Marquis of Londonderry lays the foundation stone for the line between Penshaw and Seaham Harbour. Seaham Harbour was built as part of works.
25/07/1831Londonderry Railway
First coal shipped from Seaham Harbour.
08/02/1853Londonderry Railway
Start of work on line from Seaham [1st] to Hendon Dock, Sunderland. To be built as Seaham Harbour at capacity.
17/01/1854Londonderry Railway
Hetton coal train runs from Seaham [1st] to Sunderland Dock via new line as far as Ryhope and Durham and Sunderland Railway to Hendon Dock. The connection at Ryhope was temporary for the ceremonial occasion.
03/08/1854Londonderry Railway
Line opened throughout. From Ryhope to Hendon Dock the line ran parallel to the Durham and Sunderland Railway.

Sunderland [LR] station (just south of Hendon station) closed and diverted to Hendon station.

Act passed for Hart to Dalton-le-Dale (Seaham) line to improve coastal route. Also included are improvements to the Londonderry Railway.

Sold to North Eastern Railway. Stock, coal wagons, colliery lines and Seaham Harbour pass to the Seaham Harbour Dock Company (not later merged into the National Coal Board). Hall Dene station remains in Lord Seaham's ownership. Bath Hotel (Hendon) and Station Hotel (Seaham) were excluded.

North Eastern Railway starts to work line.

London and North Eastern Railway approaches Lord Seaham to close Hall Dene station. This is agreed if Seaham Colliery station be renamed Seaham and Marlborough Street station be renamed Seaham Harbour [Station].
