Muirkirk Canal

Muirkirk Canal opened around this date running from a basin above, and to the south of, the furnacebank eastwards to the River Ayr close to the Ashaw Burn (which was crossed by an aqueduct). Coal and lime were brought in and the water could be used at the works for power and quenching. The canal was to be 16 or 17 feet wide and 4 feet deep. (At the bottom it was to be 8 feet wide.) The canal was just under 2 miles long.

Opened by the Muirkirk Iron Works company to connect the works to various coal mines to the west. Coalmines to the east (near Auldhouseburn) were served by the Muirkirk Canal.
