This considerable yard was laid out on either side of the original course of the North British Railway at Portobello between Portobello West Junction and Portobello East Junction. It gradually increased in size. The passenger lines were realigned to the south, curving round the yard with Portobello [3rd] station at the west end of the deviation. The Portobello Freightliner Terminal was built on the site of the yard. This terminal is no longer open but remains in place, disused.
These locations are along the line.
This was the junction between the North British Railway main line and its short connecting curve which ran north to meet the Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway's South Leith branch. The curve allowed trains from the east to join the branch and vice versa. It was opened to the west of Portobello [2nd] station.
