Cardross

The signalbox at Cardross was set alight very late in the day of 26 April 1971 by a drunk passenger who had just arrived on a Helensburgh bound train. The remains of the box are seen early in the morning of 28 April 1971. The signalman at the time of the incident was a friend, Jack Vickers. A temporary control centre was set up in an old waiting room on the up platform and an interlocked single lever ground frame was installed in front of the former box to release the level crossing gates. The arrangement lasted until the North Clyde resignalling was completed following which the area was controlled from Yoker.
