These BR enamel signs were of course usually white on pale blue, but, probably in a half-hearted attempt to bring it into the post-1964 British Rail image, this one was overpainted in black on white, though retaining the original Gill Sans lettering. It was well done and the result was strikingly clear, and as far as I know unique to Arbroath.
The state of the platform and and general air of decay would not be
acceptable today!
