Arten Gill Viaduct

Shortly after emerging from the north portal of Blea Moor tunnel into Upper Dentdale the Settle and Carlisle line crosses two notable viaducts, the first at Dent Head and the second, seen here, at Arten Gill. The 657 feet long, 11 arch viaduct, completed in 1875, is built from dark limestone obtained from the now disused quarries nearby. This stone, when polished, is known locally as Dent marble. The viaduct is pictured on a cold and overcast day in the winter of 1983/4 with traces of snow on the fells and a class 40 crossing southbound with a long parcels train.
