Ashington Colliery

NCB North Eastern Area No 5 (ex-BR class 14) stands at Ashington Colliery in December 1982. Between November 1968 and the closure of the colliery in October 1986 no less than 19 of these locomotives spent time here. One of the shortest lived classes ever operated by BR, a total of 56 were built at Swindon in the mid 1960s, with D9555 being the last locomotive to be produced by Swindon works. Most of the class spent a significantly longer period operating in the industries to which they were subsequently sold off than they did with BR.
