Built in 1863 by the Stockton and Darlington Railway, Darlington Locomotive Works, or North Road Shops as it was known locally, became the towns largest employer (peak of 3,815 in 1954). Following its eventual closure in 1966, the site lay derelict for some time but is now occupied by a number of retail outlets, including a large Morrisons Superstore. This view up North Road on 4 October 2008 shows the refurbished Darlington Works clock, now attached to the east wall of the Superstore and serving as a small memento of what once stood there.
