Right up to the time when the Accrington and Bacup lines closed in December 1966 Ramsbottom was a substantial station that enjoyed a service of 46 trains to Bury on weekdays, rising to 60 on Saturdays when there was a 15 minute interval service from Bacup. From that date there were a mere 12 trains each way per day, the buildings were demolished and the line singled in 1970. The signal cabin remained open but only to control the level crossing and an awful plywood shelter was put on the platform. One week after this picture was taken the passenger service ceased but the box survived to be operated by the crews of the coal trains to Rawtenstall. The restoration work since reopening by the East Lancashire Railway has created an outstanding preserved line station and the signal box is controlling trains once more.
