North British Class 84 AC Electric 84003 heads south from Preston on the Up Fast line with a parcels service. The train has just passed over the former West Lancashire line to Southport and is now climbing towards Farington Curve Junction. There were only ten of these AL4 locos and by 1980 they were rare birds so I was pleased to capture this one, which was one of the last three survivors but withdrawn by November. I first saw them in the early 1970s when, along with the EE Class 83s, they were stored in the former steam shed at Bury for several years.
