Britannia
A remarkable bridge with an interesting story. Built to carry the Lee Moor Colliery tramway across the Bacup to Rochdale line the bridge is straight and steeply graded but the arch is skewed. The footpath shown is about fifteen feet above the level of the old trackbed so before this infilling the arch was evenmore impressive. The line closed in 1947 but remained in situ for many years and the bridge featured in a scene in the film Whistle Down the Wind made in the early 1960's, as did nearby Newline Tunnel See image 23530.
