Completed in 1846, the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway over Shap stands as perhaps the greatest tribute to engineer Joseph Locke. The photograph, taken in the 1960s, shows a 2-6-4T working hard on banking duty north of Scout Green near the Shap Wells Hotel.
