Polmadie Shed

The MetroVick Co-Bo - one of the small group of BR modernisation plan diesels that will be remembered by many enthusiasts of a certain age for one positive contribution, namely extending the life of the steam locomotive. D5712 peeps out from Polmadie shed in March 1959, having brought the overnight CONDOR container service from Hendon into Gushetfaulds. Notwithstanding this singular success, the overall performance and reliability of these locomotives was such that the new, high-profile CONDOR (CONtainer Door to doOR) service was forced to revert to steam haulage a short time after this photograph was taken. The MetroVicks were all withdrawn by 1968, clocking up an average lifespan of under 10 years.
