Looking over the rooftops of Hawick on Boxing Day 1968. View is north from Douglas Road along Earl Street towards the junction with Duke Street, with the River Teviot beyond. In the left foreground is Oliver's Auction Mart with its extensive cattle pens - the area now occupied by Morrisons Supermarket See image 23300. In the sidings on the north side of the river to the right is a 2-car DMU that stabled at Hawick overnight and, on a normal day, formed the early service to Carlisle, while to its left a 4-coach train has just left the station behind a Brush Type 4 bound for Edinburgh. (This was a Boxing Day replacement for the St Pancras - Edinburgh through train and started from Hawick on this occasion.) Finally, to the right of the DMU, stands a rake of flat-cars ready for the track lifting that would commence shortly after the passage of the last scheduled passenger train over the Waverley route which would leave Edinburgh 10 days later.
