Bradford Exchange

B1 4-6-0 no 61173 is about to take a train out of Bradford Exchange in the 1960s. The station, built as a joint project by the Lancashire & Yorkshire and Great Northern Railway, effectively operated as two separate stations for much of its life. Modelled on London Kings Cross, it had two 450ft long arched roofs, with each company operating five platforms and separate booking offices, an arrangement that lasted until early 1940. The station eventually closed in 1973 with trains operating from a much simplified station located 185m further south behind the camera. The old Exchange station building was eventually demolished in 1976 and its 1973 replacement was renamed Bradford Interchange in 1983.
