Stainmore Summit
The downhill run from Stainmore on the South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway heading west towards Barras, photographed on 10 October 2009. This section must have provided some welcome relief for the fireman, unlike eastbound workings where there was still a bit to do at this point in order to reach the summit, as the smoke stains on the right hand side of the bridge still testify some 47 years after closure of the line.
