Belmont Viaduct

Half way along the abandoned link (closed 1964) between the ECML and the Leamside line north of Durham stands Belmont Viaduct which carried the railway over the River Wear. The fine stone viaduct, seen here 4 years after closure, is to be reopened as part of a walking and cycling route, thanks to the efforts of Durham County Council and Sustrans.
