A snapshot in Amtrak history at Union Station, Portland, Oregon, in the summer of 1994. On the left is the Coast Starlight service from Los Angeles to Seattle, while to the right is the Chicago-Denver-Seattle Pioneer. The latter had a relatively short operating life, from 1977 to 1997, but intermediate communities which lost their only passenger train service - such as Laramie, Boise and Baker City - have recently been campaigning for service reinstatement.
