The trackbed of the DNS can be walked for some 1.5 miles South from these railway cottages, South of Burghclere station. We met two ladies of a certain age who had grown up in these cottages, before they had mains electricity, gas, or water. They couldn't remember the day or date when the last train passed through, but they remembered that it was a steam train, and that it passed their homes at 3.30 in the morning. Their mothers woke them to see the train, and the driver gave them sweets.
