An ex-works English Electric Class 37, No. 6728, runs light engine through Ely in July 1972, perhaps on the way back to Stratford. At this time these engines were the mainstay of the loco hauled London Liverpool St to Kings Lynn services. The Type 3 is just passing the very wide level crossing controlled by Ely North signal box. This loco later became 37028, and was used on West Highland services in the early 1980s. In 1986 it was modified and became 37505 and was used in South Wales, Scotland and France in this quise. Only finally withdrawn in 2007 it was removed from Ayr TMD and later dismantled at EMR Kingsbury.
