Hopper and container wagons ready for loading with domestic coal for Scotland at Coed Bach washery on the Kidwelly-Cwmmawr branch in 1987. North of the border, most conventional coal traffic in flat-bottom mineral wagons had ceased in 1983, but the new order - including, eventually, coal container railheads at Gartcosh, Aberdeen and Inverness - was significantly delayed by the 1984-85 miners' strike, which also led to a flood of imports from which rail never really recovered.
