Looking north along the Furness trackbed from Arnside to Sandside and Hincaster alongside the Kent estuary. A primary purpose of this line was to carry iron ore between Barrow and North East England via the Stainmore route but it was also a useful link for excursion traffic for many years. Closed as a through route in 1963 this particular stretch lingered on for a few years as a siding to the quarry at Sandside but is now a popular footpath. (Map Reference SD 470794). In railway days there was a low wall along the seaward side of this stretch of line but the embankment has been made part of the local sea defences and the wall removed. See image 28623 for the view towards Arnside from the same point.
