Kingsknowe station on the Shotts line closed in 1964 but somehow
managed to reopen in 1971: surely a rare distinction at a time when
railways were at their nadir. It does unspectacular business of 400 or so bookings a week (as do its neighbours on either side) and serves a residential area. On a warm and sunny late afternoon in July 1999 a class 305 calls with a North Berwick to Kirknewton service which would then run ECS via Carstairs to Shields depot in Glasgow. Most services were (and are) operated by 156s.
