Scarborough

The second of Scarborough's still-operational funiculars, the South Cliff Lift, looking east over the top station on 22 March 2010. This was just a few days before 'the season' started, with that strange feeling of 'calm before the storm' that still pervades seaside resorts at this time of year. Opened in 1875 by the Scarborough South Cliff Tramway Company Limited, the South Cliff Lift is claimed to be the UK's first funicular. Originally built on the counterweight principle using sea water see image 26874 it is now electrically operated and was further modified in 1997 to make it completely automatic.
