In 1989 there was still one locomotive hauled daylight service from Glasgow to Fort William. In the morning this ran south to Glasgow Central which led to a route via Glasgow Central (Low Level) and Rutherglen to reach the High Level station. The train, four coaches hauled by 37413 Loch Eil Outward Bound, is seen about to join the mainline at Rutherglen off the Switchback/Argyle line. In the afternoon it returned north. This service was something very much along the lines of what Whestrail would like to introduce. The track to the left was part of the Rutherglen Training Centre and this view has changed as the centre has closed and the M74 extension is under construction over the lines here.
