Edinburgh Lothian Road

On 15 February 1848 the Caledonian opened its Edinburgh terminus at Lothian Road. This temporary facility was intended to last a fairly short time pending completion of a much grander structure off to the left that was to become Princes Street station. In fact Lothian Road passenger station was in operation for just over 22 years with closure coinciding with the eventual opening of Princes Street on 2 May 1870. It was from Lothian Road station that Edinburgh's first through service to London commenced in February 1848, some two years prior to the first ECML services which followed the opening of the Royal Border Bridge by Queen Victoria (God bless her) in 1850. After the transfer of passenger services to the new Princes Street station, the site was subsequently put to use as a goods depot. This view around 1972 shows most of the area now cleared with a bus heading south along Lothian Road between the Usher Hall and Alexander's car showroom opposite.
