First generaton DMUs allowed you the simple pleasure of 'playing
driver', provided the driver hadn't been a spoilsport and pulled down the blind behind him (admittedly necessary at night to prevent
distracting reflections). It's September 1999 and there are just a
couple of months left of Class 117s operating out of Edinburgh from
where, for a few years, they'd been used only at peak times. With the driver's hand (and paper) in view, and watched by a figure on the bridge, the unit comes to a halt at Rosyth with a northbound service.
