A down Leeds - Glasgow train passing the former <I>Lighthouse</I> signal box that still stood on the hill to the north of Dumfries station in the early 1970s. In the words of renowned railway photographer Derek Cross, the historic structure was <I>'...demolished in an act of planning vandalism.'</I> Nearest the camera is the remaining section of <I>The Port Road</I> to Stranraer, still open at this time as far as the ICI factory at Cargenbridge, just beyond Maxwelltown.
