Forth Banks Works
View from Newcastle Central along South Street on 16 August 2010, showing part of Robert Stephenson's former Forth Banks works, with a section of the QEII Metro bridge seen crossing the Tyne in the background. What was the world's first purpose built locomotive works opened here in 1823, in connection with the construction of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. Locomotives built here included Locomotion and Rocket, with the works going on to become a worldwide exporter. Forth Banks works finally closed in 1960, but the office block and one of the worshops was subsequently restored by the Robert Stephenson Trust.
