Kinghorn

Shale oil production is mainly associated with West Lothian, but the shale stratum carries on under the Forth to make it into Fife (just) and there was a pit and works at Binnend, behind Burntisland. Production lasted a mere 16 years until 1893/4. The two mile branch built to serve it opened in 1887, so had an even shorter working life. Not surprisingly faith and imagination is needed to follow most of its course today, but this bit of evidence is incontrovertible. This bridge, photographed on 6 November 2010, is about half-way along the former line on the other side of the B923 from Kinghorn Loch.
