The south end of Carlisle on 17 August 1957 with the Victorian end-screens still in place. 40628 stands on one of the centre roads while 70052 Firth of Tay is at platform 4 with the 1.45pm Glasgow (Central) - Manchester/Liverpool.
[Additional: The major station refurbishment which commenced later that year saw the screens demolished and the roof over platform 1 and the west sidings removed. Elsewhere the roof was cut back at either end with the current 'more functional' screens installed. Newly exposed sections of the platforms were equipped with steel-framed canopies. The original supporting walls still stand as a reminder of times past.]
