'The Three Towns' is the local name for the contiguous settlements of Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston. As you can see from this 1945 OS One Inch map there was once real railway competition even in this small pond with nine passenger stations between three small close-packed towns. It was the former Lanarkshire and Ayrshire Railway's line which lost out. All the stations open then are open today, though at the end of the branch Ardrossan Winton Pier was cut back a bit after being renamed Ardrossan Harbour. The other two Ardrossan stations are Ardrossan Town, then, on the border with Saltcoats, Ardrossan South Beach. Crown Copyright 1945.
