Fairburn 2-6-4T no 42131 has just passed Lochgreen Junction, Troon, heading north on 21 August 1959. The train is on what was then the 'down branch line' with the 'main line' (the now closed Troon avoiding line) running off to the left at the junction. The train is the 5.10pm Ayr - Kilmarnock mail & passenger, conveying a through Royal Mail sorting van next to the locomotive. The mail van would be transferred to the rear of the 5.30pm Glasgow St Enoch - Carlisle train at Kilmarnock and, on reaching Carlisle, would be attached to the up 'West Coast Postal'.
