Mule locomotive no 181 assists the P&O liner 'Oceana' on its journey through the Panama Canal in November 2010. These rack mounted electric locomotives, fitted with powerful winches, are used for side-to-side and braking control on many of the larger vessels using the canal locks. Some of the biggest ships negotiating the locks (often leaving only a 2 ft clearance on each side) can require the combined assistance of 8 such mules. See image 34074
