The signal is off for a Lanark-bound DMU in this September 1964 view east from Douglas West station, a few weeks before the complete closure of the line. The rail-served coal mine in the middle distance is a reminder that if the line had survived for freight, it would have been carrying massive quantities of open cast coal over the last 25 years - traffic which instead went by road to the Ravenstruther railhead near Carstairs.
