Scene on the south side of Ayr harbour in September 1955 with TS Duchess of Hamilton berthed in her usual place. Built for the Caledonian Steam Packet Company by Harland and Wolff at Govan, she was the regular Ayr steamer and had been fitted with a bow rudder (the wheel is just visible on the foredeck) to assist movements at Ayr, which was difficult to enter under certain conditions. The railway sidings here were reached from the goods station located to the north of the harbour via a now-dismantled bridge, the piers of which still stand in the river. See image 45697
