Padiham

Another missed opportunity. This is the foot of the 1:40 bank from Padiham to Rose Grove and after the last train to Padiham Power Station ran in 1993 the rails were left in place for a further 17 years. That should have been enough time for me to visit but I left it too long and now its a cycleway. In days of steam the banking of trains up this fearsome gradient was a well known spectacle for the residents of the town, vividly described in Stuart Taylor's Foxline series Journeys by Excursion Train from East Lancashire.
